You only have to look at the Medusa straight on to see her. And she's not deadly. She's beautiful and she's laughing. -Hélène Cixous Other Visions Art Tours seeks to resituate the histories of art to include a range of different perspectives still all too often overlooked in traditional analysis. By destabilising conventional historiographies, Other Visions critically examines visual culture, with specialised focus on subjectivity, gender and sexuality.

A guided tour through the Tate Britain investigating the representation of women’s sexuality and power. Pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. - Laura Mulvey Men look at women. Women watch themselves being looked at. - John Berger This tour will examine how women’s sexuality has been portrayed throughout the history of art, untangling issues of subjectivity, gender and power along the way. From classical nudes as an object of male desire, to contemporary artists who have challenged stereotypes, this tour will examine the politics of representation and the study of art in an accessible and engaging way. Meet on the front steps of the main entrance. Tickets are free and booking is essential.
